Mom of 4 (ages 3 to 8 ), premed student, and new comer to raising chickens. My Grandmother aLways had chickens. I grew up next door to her...so it seems natural to have them pecking around. I have never raised any on my own...so here comes an adventure! Located in Michigan |

About Me
I'm a psychotherapist in Ann Arbor, and we've been empty nesters for a year-and-a-half now, much to my dismay. I've found the perfect antidote! Chickens! I'm also into gardening, particularly since I have more time now that I'm not commuting daily into Detroit for work! I was fortunate to have won a chicken coop and a year of Purina chicken feed in a contest from Mother Earth News/Grit Magazine (Ogden Publications), which was delivered a couple of weeks ago. It's really a chicken palace - made by Green Chicken Coop up in the Saginaw/Bay City area. Unbelievable craftsmanship, and personally delivered by Dan himself and a faithful employee. My husband's the chaplain at Canterbury House - the Episcopal Ministry to the University of Michigan - so there were at least a dozen students and grad students here to celebrate the delivery of the coop. Lemonade, beer, chips, salsa - and even music! Two guys who are professional musicians brought their small trumpet and bass acoustic guitar and played happy music while the rest of us visited. The Chicken Coop Waltz was my favorite. We went over to Randy's Roosters in Muskegon to pick up our chickens; two of seven different varieties. Wyandottes, Marans, Sussex, Brahmas, Americaunas, and two others whose names I'll remember as soon as I close this out! They just turned four weeks, and we just moved them from the dog crate into the coop, and they line up at the door every day for my husband to open it into their run. You can see from the above picture, they're as devoted to Ruby (our middle dog) as she is to them. |

I am newly retired and am enjoying it! I am just starting out with Silkies, Showgirls and a few frizzled Polish. Star Bright Farms was kind enough to get me started with some beautiful Silkies. Pictured is my daughter and I in Chicago |
